If you’re looking for healthy smoothie recipes, you have to try my banana coffee smoothie recipe. With frozen banana, cacao and a dash of vanilla, this coffee banana smoothie is the perfect breakfast coffee smoothie (or afternoon pick me up).
Packed full of energy and a subtle choc-vanilla flavor, my easy coffee smoothie recipe is highly likely to become a new favourite!
Why You’ll Love This Banana Coffee Smoothie Recipe
I’m a huge fan of hot coffee drinks, but as the seasons change and the weather warms up, I find myself looking for cold coffee recipes to enjoy my daily caffeine fix.
There are plenty of cold coffee options (iced latte, iced coffee and coffee frappes come to mind), but another great type of coffee drink is a simple coffee smoothie.
Perfect for anyone who enjoys a breakfast smoothie to start the day, this coffee and fruit smoothie is also great as an afternoon pick me up.
It’s quick and easy to make and full of all natural ingredients too.
What You’ll Need To Make A Coffee And Banana Smoothie
If you make smoothies or frappes at home, you already know how important it is to use a good blender.
Especially if you’re blending ice or frozen ingredients, a good quality blender is essential for a smooth creamy finish. So to achieve a creamy texture in my healthy coffee smoothie you’ll need a good blender – I recommend one that has at least 1000 watts power.
You will also need a coffee maker to brew some strong coffee. The type of coffee maker doesn’t matter – as long as you can brew a strong batch.

Healthy Coffee Smoothie Ingredients
This easy banana coffee smoothie recipe can be blended in a matter of minutes and has options to customize too. The specific quantities and steps are listed in the recipe card below, so here I will just touch on each of the ingredients that make this smoothie so delicious. You will need:
- Strong brewed coffee
- Frozen banana
- Milk of choice
- Cacao powder
- Vanilla extract
Frozen Banana: I always seem to have overripe bananas sitting in our fruit bowl. Instead of throwing them out, peel them, break them into pieces and pop them in a freezer bag in the freezer. Frozen bananas are perfect for baking and for making an icy cold frozen banana smoothie recipe.
Milk: I use whole milk to make this banana mocha smoothie, but you can easily substitute with your preferred milk. Use soy, almond, oat milk or coconut milk to turn it into a great vegan coffee option.
Coffee: There are no limits here! Use your favourite brewed coffee style – all types of coffee machine will work: cold brew, stovetop coffee maker, espresso machine, French press, coffee pod machine or even instant coffee.
Vanilla: Often overlooked, vanilla gives the smoothie a lovely extra flavor boost. I prefer vanilla extract but you can use vanilla essence too.
Substitutions And Variations
Cacao Powder: If you don’t have cacao powder, cocoa is a suitable substitute, as is drinking chocolate for a sweeter mocha smoothie.
Spices: Add your favourite spice as a topping to your coffee breakfast smoothie – cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin spice all work well with this recipe.
Frozen Banana: If you don’t have frozen banana, simply use a fresh ripe banana and add a cup of ice cubes to the blender to thicken the smoothie.
How To Make A Coffee Smoothie
Step 1: Brew your coffee. This recipe includes a cup of strong coffee.
The easiest option is to use leftover coffee from your drip coffee maker. Simply store it in the fridge until you need it for your coffee and banana smoothie recipe.
If you have an espresso machine, I suggest you pull a double shot of espresso and add cold water to make up a full cup of coffee to make your espresso banana smoothie.
To make an instant coffee smoothie, I recommend you use a good quality dark roast instant coffee for the best flavor.
Step 2: Blend your ingredients. Pop all your ingredients in the blender. If you don’t have frozen banana, simply add a handful of ice cubes to the blender with the other ingredients.
Blend well until creamy and frothy. Then pour into two glasses. Sprinkle the top with a little more cacao or favorite spice (if using) and enjoy your banana coffee smoothie!
Recipe Tips For Success
- Use A High Speed Blender: You will achieve a creamier finish with a high speed blender of at least 1000watts.
- You Need A Frozen Ingredient: Frozen banana or ice cubes are essential to create the refreshing blended texture of this drink. Don’t skip this!
