What Is A Smoothie Bowl?
A smoothie bowl is a thick and creamy blend of fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious ingredients served in a bowl. Unlike a traditional smoothie, it’s thicker in texture, and topped with a variety of delicious toppings, making it perfect for eating with a spoon.
Common toppings include fresh fruits, granola, nuts, seeds, and drizzles like honey or nut butter. Smoothie breakfast bowls are not only visually appealing but also packed with vitamins, minerals, and natural flavors, making them a popular choice for a healthy breakfast or snack.

Mocha Smoothie Bowl Ingredients
You’ll need just a handful of ingredients to make a mocha smoothie bowl at home. The specific quantities and steps are listed in the recipe card below, so here I just want to touch on each of the ingredients that make this frozen smoothie bowl recipe so delicious!

Brewed coffee: This is simply regular brewed coffee. Make a little extra in the morning and pop it in the fridge so you have coffee on hand for your smoothie bowl. Or brew a fresh batch and chill before using.
Frozen banana: Essential for a thick and frozen consistency, banana also adds a lovely creaminess to the smoothie bowl.
Almond butter: Boosts the protein in the smooothie and helps create a thick creamy texture.
Dates: I like to use medjool dates for their lovely flavor. These give a little natural sweetness to the recipe plus boost the fibre in the meal. Make sure to remove the pip before blending!
Cacao powder: All natural and unprocessed, cacao gives our smoothie bowl a lovely chocolate mocha flavor.
Vanilla: I like to use vanilla extract in all my recipes as it has a lovely depth of flavor.
Ice: Essential to create the thick frozen smoothie bowl consistency. Ice cubes are best.
Toppings: Completely optional and can be personalized to your tastes.

Ingredient Substitutions
Coffee: Feel free to use any type of coffee. French press, cold brew, moka pot or espresso all work equally well. If using espresso, pull a double shot and lengthen with hot water to reach the quantity of liquid required.
Banana: If you don’t like banana, substitute your preferred frozen fruit. Berries work well. If you don’t want to include any fruit, you will need to double the quantity of ice – but note there will be a change in the consistency of the smoothie (more icy, less creamy).
Almond butter: Any nut butter will work – so use your preferred nut butter for taste.
Dates: If you don’t have dates on hand, you can substitute honey or maple syrup. Use one tablespoon per bowl.
Cacao: Cocoa powder is a suitable substitute for cacao powder.
Equipment Needed
You will need a high powered blender and a coffee maker to make this coffee banana smoothie bowl recipe.

How To Make A Smoothie Bowl At Home
It takes just a few minutes to make this easy smoothie bowl at home. Below is a quick overview of the steps, for the full recipe and ingredient list, scroll down to the printable recipe card.
Step 1: Brew your coffee if you haven’t any leftover coffee and set aside to cool for a few minutes.
Then pop all your ingredients into a blender. I tend to put the ice in first, then the other ingredients and the cacao in last so it doesn’t get stuck under the blades.

Step 2: Blend until smooth – the time will depend on your blender, but usually just 1-2 minutes.

Step 3: Pour your breakfast bowl smoothie into a bowl. You can enjoy as is, or get ready for the fun part – adding the toppings!

Step 4: Add your favorite smoothie bowl toppings. Ideas include fresh fruit, crunchy granola and cacao nibs as pictured below.

Smoothie Bowl Toppings Ideas
There really are endless smoothie bowl toppings ideas – that is one of the reasons I love this breakfast idea so much!
Popular choices include:
- Berries – strawberries, raspberries, blueberries – all of them amazing.
- Seeds – chia seeds are great for adding protein and fibre to your dish, other good ideas are hemp seeds, flax seeds, sunflower seeds or pepitas.
- Nuts – pecans and walnuts both pair very well with coffee and chocolate, but almonds or pistachios would be yummy too.
- Granola – a bit of crunch is (in my opinion) essential for a smoothie bowl. My baked coffee granola would be a great choice!
- Coconut: Flaked or shaved coconut. Just don’t use desiccated coconut.
- Drizzle – honey, almond butter, chocolate sauce, maple syrup.
Recipe Variations
Protein powder: Add 1/2 – 1 scoop of natural, vanilla or chocolate protein powder to boost the protein in your smoothie bowl.
Chia seeds: instead of sprinkling chia on top, add a tablespoon of chia seeds to the blender for an extra fibre boost.
Nut butters: Try oat butter, cashew butter or peanut butter for a choc peanut butter smoothie!

Recipe Tips For Success
- Cold coffee: Chill your coffee before using. Hot coffee will start to melt your ice cubes, which will impact the frozen consistency of your smoothie bowl.
- Frozen banana: Essential for making a smoothie bowl with a thick and creamy consistency.
- High speed blender: For the best results, use a high speed blender.
- Watch the liquid: Don’t be tempted to add more coffee for a stronger caffeine flavor – too much liquid makes it difficult to achieve the frozen soft serve consistency needed for a smoothie bowl. If you want a thicker smoothie bowl, add more frozen fruit instead.
Serving Suggestions

How To Store A Breakfast Bowl
Your DIY smoothie bowl is best enjoyed right away, but if you’re a meal prep fan, it can be frozen! Simply blend and store your homemade smoothie bowl (without the toppings) in a freezer safe container with a lid.
When you are ready to eat, place the container in the fridge overnight. Add your toppings and enjoy!
