Matcha And Strawberry Smoothie Ingredients
There are just a handful of ingredients to make my matcha smoothie recipe. You’ll need:
- Frozen strawberries: Available year round, frozen berries give the smoothie it’s icy cold and deliciously thick texture. You can use fresh strawberries, but you’ll need to add ice (see below).
- Almond milk: I use almond milk in this recipe to keep it dairy free, but you can use your milk of choice, including dairy milk.
- Matcha powder: Powdered green tea – I recommend using a high quality culinary grade matcha.
- Honey: I like a little added sweetness to my smoothies, but you can omit if you don’t need it. If your matcha powder is a little bitter, the honey helps improve the flavor of the drink.
- Vanilla extract: Vanilla adds some depth to the drink. You can omit – but I don’t recommend you do.
What Is The Best Matcha For Smoothies?
There are two types of matcha on the market – ceremonial and culinary.
Ceremonial matcha powder is made from the highest quality young tea leaves. It has a smooth, delicate flavor with a vibrant green color and is the powder of choice for traditional tea ceremonies. The flavor is of utmost importance as it is enjoyed on its own.
Culinary matcha, on the other hand, is made from slightly older tea leaves and has a stronger, more bitter taste. It is the type more commonly used in baking, or blending into recipes like smoothies.
There tends to be more variation in quality when it comes to culinary matcha, so it is essential to use a good quality matcha from a well known brand to ensure you are using the best matcha for smoothies.
Substitutions
Strawberries – I mentioned above you can use fresh strawberries, and when they’re in abundance it makes sense to use them!
When using fresh strawberries you will need to add a 1/2 to 1 cup of ice to the mixture, otherwise your smoothie won’t have that nice thick icy texture.
Honey – You can also use maple syrup if that is what you have on hand.
How To Make A Strawberry Matcha Smoothie
Here’s an overview of how to make a matcha smoothie. For the full recipe and ingredient list, scroll down to the printable recipe card.
Step 1: Add Ingredients To Blender – Add the frozen strawberries, milk, matcha powder, vanilla, and honey to the blender.
The best order to add the ingredients will vary depending on the type of blender you have – so check the how-to guide to see whether the liquids or frozen items should be added first.
If using ice, give the ingredients a quick blend before adding the ice to the blender.
Step 2: Blend – Blend on high until smooth and creamy. Check for texture – if too thick add a little more milk. If not thick enough, add some more ice.
Step 3: Taste for sweetness – Before pouring, taste the smoothie mixture and add more honey or maple syrup if desired.
Step 4: Serve – Pour into a glass. Garnish with a slice of strawberry and a dash of extra matcha if desired and enjoy while cold.
Recipe Variations
Spinach – For a nutritious green boost, add a handful of baby spinach leaves to the blender.
Banana – Frozen bananas are a popular addition to matcha smoothies especially when made as breakfast smoothies. They soften the flavor, boost the energy in the drink and thicken the mixture. Try adding 1/2 a frozen banana to this recipe.
Protein Powder – Add 1/2 scoop of your favorite protein powder for an extra protein boost.
Recipe Tips For Success
- Frozen fruit is the secret to achieving a thick smoothie consistency. When fresh strawberries are in season, add 1/2 to 1 cup of ice cubes to the blender to achieve the same result.
- Use a high speed blender. You will achieve a creamier smoothie with the help of a high speed blender, especially when using frozen ingredients.
Matcha Smoothie FAQs
Does Matcha Contain Caffeine?
Yes, matcha powder has caffeine in it. While matcha contains less caffeine per gram than coffee, matcha is absorbed at a slower rate than coffee, resulting in more sustained energy boost throughout the day.
Are All Matcha Powders The Same?
No, matcha powders are not all the same. There are two main grades of matcha – ceremonial and culinary. In addition, the quality and taste of matcha can vary widely depending on factors like where the tea was grown, how it was processed, and how fresh the powder is.
Higher quality matcha will have a bright green color and a smoother, less bitter taste, while lower quality matcha may be duller in color and more astringent.

- 1 tablespoon matcha powder
- 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Add the frozen strawberries, almond milk, matcha powder, honey and vanilla to a high speed blender.
- Blend until smooth and creamy. If the smoothie is too thick, add a little more almond milk. If not thick enough, add a few more ice cubes and blend.
- Taste for sweetness and adjust if necessary. Blend briefly to mix any extra ingredients added at this stage.
- Pour into 2 short or 1 large glass and enjoy cold.
Notes
- I recommend using frozen strawberries so the smoothie is icy cold with a nice thick consistency. If using fresh strawberries, wash and hull them and add 1/2 cup of ice cubes to the blender.
