Hazelnut Coffee Syrup Ingredients

To make my hazelnut syrup for coffee you’ll need the following ingredients. The specific quantities and steps are listed in the recipe card below.

  • Roasted hazelnuts: Pre-roasted hazelnuts are the easiest option for this recipe. If you buy raw hazelnuts, you’ll just need to toast or roast them before using for the best hazelnut syrup flavor.
  • Sugar: I use raw granulated sugar, but you can also use white or brown sugar.
  • Vanilla extract: Use the best quality vanilla you can afford for a rich vanilla flavor.
  • Water

How To Make Hazelnut Syrup At Home

Here’s a quick overview of how to make hazelnut coffee syrup. For the full recipe and ingredient list, scroll down to the printable recipe card.

You’ll need a medium saucepan, food processor (or knife), fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, and a syrup jar to get started.

Step 1: Place the roasted hazelnuts in a food processor and pulse until they are roughly chopped in to small pieces. Don’t overprocess or you will end up with a hazelnut paste.

Tip: If using raw hazelnuts, toast them in a frying pan on low heat for 3-5 minutes until fragrant before using.

Step 2: In a medium saucepan add the water and sugar. Heat on a medium heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved.

Add the chopped hazelnuts to the pan, and bring to a gentle simmer. Then reduce the heat to low, and cook for 10-15 minutes for the nuts to infuse their hazelnut flavor into the simple syrup. Don’t let it boil or bubble furiously.

Remove from the heat and leave to cool in the saucepan for 15-20 minutes.

Step 3: Strain the syrup into a jug through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Press the mixture with a spoon to extract all the flavored syrup. Set the hazelnuts aside (don’t throw them out!).

Stir the vanilla extract through the syrup and leave to cool completely.

Once cool, pour the hazelnut simple syrup into a jar, seal, and store in the fridge until needed.

The leftover caramelized hazelnuts are delicious sprinkled on your oatmeal, on pancakes or just as a sweet snack. Simply spread them out on a plate to dry then store in an airtight container.

Recipe Tips For Success

  • Use roasted hazelnuts for a quicker preparation.
  • Simmer the syrup gently and avoid boiling. Don’t leave on the heat too long or the syrup will reduce too much and become thick.
  • Leave the syrup to cool completely before storing in the fridge.

How To Store Hazelnut Simple Syrup

Store your homemade coffee syrup in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. I recommend storing in a syrup jar with a pouring spout for ease of use.

You can also freeze this coffee syrup. I suggest you portion the syrup into an ice cube tray so you can defrost just the amount you need.

Serving Suggestions

  • Hot coffee drinks: Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of hazelnut syrup to your white or black coffee drinks for a quick and easy hazelnut coffee recipe.
  • Iced coffee drinks: This syrup is delicious in cold brew and iced coffee recipes. Simply pour a little flavored syrup into your glass and add your coffee and milk (if using). Top with a little whipped cream and sprinkle over some of the candied hazelnuts for an extra special iced coffee drink!
  • Hazelnut creamer: Use homemade hazelnut syrup to make my homemade hazelnut creamer. It tastes way better than store bought creamer and it’s so easy to make!
  • Dessert Topper: Drizzle a little hazelnut syrup (and some of the caramalized hazelnuts) over your icecream, pancakes, waffles or even on these mocha muffins.
