Make your own homemade hazelnut syrup with real roasted hazelnuts and simple ingredients. Perfect for hazelnut flavored coffee recipes, this easy flavored coffee syrup adds a rich, nutty sweetness to all your favorite drinks and treats!
Place the roasted hazelnuts in a food processor. Pulse until they are roughly chopped. Don't over process or they will turn to a paste. Alternatively chop the hazelnuts with a knife into small pieces.
In a medium saucepan add the water and sugar. Heat over a medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves.
Add the chopped hazelnuts to the pan. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and cook gently for 10-15 minutes. Do not boil. Remove from the heat and leave the syrup in the pan to cool to room temperature.
Strain the syrup through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a bowl or jar to remove the hazelnut pieces. Gently press the mixture with the back of a spoon to extract all the syrup. Set the hazelnut pieces aside (see note 1).
Stir the vanilla extract into the syrup. Once the syrup has cooled completely pour into a bottle or jar to store. Enjoy the syrup in your coffee, on pancakes or waffles!
Store in a sealed jar or bottle in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
Don't throw the hazelnuts out - they are delicious sprinkled on oatmeal, on pancakes or as a sweet snack. Simply spread them out on a tray and allow to dry before placing in an airtight container.
This simple syrup is delicious added straight to coffee drinks, but it's also perfect to make homemade hazelnut coffee creamer too.
The nutritional information does not include hazelnut calories as the hazelnuts are removed from the syrup before using.
