What Is Italian Sweet Cream Coffee Creamer?

Coffee-mate is the company most famous for their Italian Sweet Crème coffee creamer. Described as a blend of creamy gelato mixed with decadent buttercream frosting flavors, it is one of the most popular and beloved creamer flavors amongst coffee creamer fans.

In recent times the company has come under criticism for changing the recipe, with many fans begging them to return to the classic mix – which it seems the company is now doing!

The quantities are listed in the recipe card below, so here I just want to touch on each of the ingredients that make this creamer so delicious!

  • Sweetened condensed milk: To achieve the rich and velvety texture.
  • Half and half: Helps achieve a pouring consistency as well as extra creaminess.
  • Vanilla extract: For flavor. Vanilla extract is better than vanilla essence as it has a deeper vanilla flavor.
  • Almond extract: What gives this creamer it’s unique copycat Coffee mate creamer flavor.

Step 1: Add the sweetened condensed milk and half and half to a large bowl or 28oz mason jar. Add the vanilla extract then almond extract (in small increments to check for taste).

Step 2: Mix with a whisk or spoon until well combined. If using a mason jar, replace the lid and shake to combine.

Step 3: Serve and enjoy with your coffee and store the remaining creamer in a sealed jar in the fridge.

Recipe Variations

The secret to the flavor of Italian sweet cream coffee creamer is the almond extract.

But if you find it too strong, you can reduce the amount of almond extract, or remove it altogether for a super tasty vanilla sweet cream creamer!

You can also use the base creamer for a range of other flavors – so instead of almond extract add peppermint or coconut extract or even maple syrup! The options are endless.

Serving Suggestions

I recommend you add 2 tablespoons of creamer to your favorite coffee drink to start, then add more if you prefer a creamier drink.

Try adding this creamer to your:

  • Cold brew coffee
  • Iced coffee
  • Hot black coffee
  • Milkshakes
  • As an ice cream topping!

How To Store Your Creamer

This homemade creamer needs to be stored in the fridge. It will stay fresher if you seal the jar with a lid.

When stored in a sealed jar it will last about 7 days in the fridge – or as long as the expiry date on your half and half.

I don’t recommend freezing creamer, so it is best consumed within the week.

Recipe Tips For Success

  • Use fresh half and half: The creamer will last in the fridge up to the expiry date of the half and half. So buy and use fresh half and half for longer lasting creamer.
  • Use the best vanilla extract: Homemade creamer is only as good as the ingredients you use. So I recommend you use the best quality vanilla extract you can afford. Vanilla essence is not nearly as rich in flavor – but if it is all you have, you may need to add more than 2 teaspoons to achieve a good vanilla taste.
  • Taste for flavor: Almond extract has a strong taste. If you are unsure about how much almond extract you like in your creamer, add just 1/2 a teaspoon at a time to the mixture and taste for flavor as you go. You can always add more, but it is tricky (actually, impossible) to remove it once in the bowl!

Servings: 20 serves
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz/395g)
  • cups half and half
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract see note 1
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract see note 2

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl and whisk until combined. You can also add ingredients to a 28 oz mason jar with a lid and shake to combine.
  • Pour into a carafe or jar with lid and store in the fridge until needed.
  • Shake well before using as ingredients will settle over time.

Notes

  1. Use the best quality vanilla extract you can find for the best tasting creamer. Vanilla essence is not as rich in flavor, so if that is what you have, you may need to add more to achieve a good vanilla flavor.
  2. Almond extract has a strong flavor, so if this is your first time making Italian sweet cream creamer, I recommend you add just 1/2 a teaspoon at a time and check for taste before adding more.
  3. Store creamer in the fridge for up to 7 days. Creamer will last up to the expiry date of your half and half, so use fresh half and half for the longest storage time.
  4. I generally use 2 tablespoons of this creamer in my coffee, so I have set this as the serving size.
  5. Sweet cream coffee creamer can be used in hot coffees, cold brew, iced coffees and milkshakes!
