Why Roast Coffee Beans At Home?

So why buy a coffee roaster home machine in the first place? I mean they can be pretty pricey, and can’t you buy great tasting coffee beans that have already been roasted?

It is true that these days it is much easier to find great quality roasted coffee beans.

But if you’re after the freshest tasting coffee, then you really need to get yourself a coffee bean roaster machine.

For The Freshest Coffee

As most coffee lovers know, as soon as coffee beans have been roasted, they start losing their rich flavor and aroma.

So for the very best tasting coffee, you want to brew your coffee with freshly roasted coffee beans.

Having the best coffee roaster for home use lets you do this much more easily and for far less money.

To Save Money

Which is another great reason to purchase coffee bean roasters – to save money.

If you are roasting your own coffee beans you will be purchasing green coffee beans, which cost around half the price of roasted beans.

Also you are less likely to go to the local coffee shop when you can make your own coffee exactly how you like it. Win-win!

Plus if you really love your coffee, roasting beans at home is a lot of fun and quickly becomes an obsession!

Things To Consider To Purchase The Best Coffee Bean Roaster Machine

Whilst there’s some great top-rated coffee roasters on the market, there’s no such thing as the best coffee roasters in the world.

Everyone has their own individual preferences to consider when choosing the best coffee roasting equipment.

In order to purchase the best home roaster for you, consider the following factors.

1. Type Of Coffee Bean Roaster

There are two main types of kitchen coffee roasters – a fluid air bed coffee roaster (sometimes called an air roaster) and a drum coffee roaster.

Fluid Air Bed Roaster

A fluid air bed roaster works somewhat like a popcorn maker in that hot air is pushed around a roasting chamber and heats the beans.  The beans are agitated and spin whilst being heated with hot air.

A hot air coffee roaster generally roasts coffee beans more quickly but they tend to have less capacity then a drum roaster.

As a fluid air bed roaster roasts coffee beans much quicker than a home drum coffee roaster, the coffee tends to be brighter and retains more of its complexity, but lacks some of the fuller body associated with dark espresso beans.

Drum Roaster

With drum roasters, heat is applied to the outside of a metal chamber, the beans are located inside the chamber which rotates.  The beans are roasted as they come into contact with the heated chamber.

For those coffee lovers that drink a lot of a coffee, a drum roaster is the better option given they can roast a larger quantity of coffee beans at the one time.

Coffee beans roasted in a drum roaster tend to have more body, caramelization and are often preferred by espresso drinkers. We review some of the best drum roaster options below.

Other Types Of Roasters

Manual coffee roaster options include popcorn makers, skillets and ceramic handheld roasters.

Great for beginners and with a low entry level cost, we cover the best options in our coffee roaster equipment reviews below.

2. Size

In terms of size, this refers to the volume of beans that can be roasted at one time.  We have listed the total capacity for each roaster in the table above.

Consider how often you would like to roast coffee, and how much coffee you will need during that time frame.

The size you need will also depend on what brewing methods you use. Espresso drinks require a smaller volume of coffee beans than drip, cold brew or french press.

For example, to brew a full 12 cup pot, you need around 2.5-3.5 oz of coffee, whereas a double shot of espresso uses just 0.7 oz (20g).

Note you also need to factor in time for the beans to rest, as freshly roasted beans should be stored for 4-12 days before brewing.

Generally air roasters only have the capacity to roast a small volume of beans at a time, as opposed to a drum roaster which tend to have larger chambers for roasting larger quantities of beans at once.

You should also consider how much space you have to store the coffee roaster when considering the size.

Coffee beans in heavy fry pan used as a stove coffee roaster.

3. Cooling

Once the beans have been roasted perfectly, you want your home coffee bean roaster machine to cool down as quickly as possible to avoid the beans continuing to roast.

In order for this to occur it’s important that your roaster has a cooling feature.

Alternatively, some coffee bean roasting machines have a separate cooling tray, or you can buy a separate cooling tray to cool them down quickly.

4. Smoke Suppression System

In order to reduce the amount of smoke that comes from your domestic coffee roaster, some machines have a built-in smoke suppression system.

In any case, it is a good idea to roast coffee beans in a well ventilated area outside to reduce the risk of smoke or fire inside the home.

5. Chaff Collection

For an easy to clean and maintain home kitchen coffee roaster, look for machines which have a chaff collection system.

This makes it much easier to quickly remove the waste from the coffee bean roaster after roasting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Roast Coffee Beans In A Popcorn Maker?

Yes you can!  Whilst a popcorn maker is not designed to roast coffee beans to perfection, it certainly is a cheap alternative to purchasing a coffee roaster.

For the best type of popcorn maker for roasting coffee beans at home look for one which has a flat bottom with side vents.

Popcorn machines with mesh bottoms or bottoms with holes should not be used as they can become a fire hazard.

What Size Home Coffee Roaster Machine Should I Purchase?

As to what size coffee roaster is right for you, it depends how much coffee you drink as this will determine how often you will be roasting coffee beans.

If you only drink coffee a couple of times a week, then a small batch coffee roaster will be fine for you.

However if you live in a large household where several people are drinking coffee every day or you drink multiple cups a day, you may want to opt to a large coffee roaster with the ability to roast a larger volume of beans at once.

Are Coffee Roasters Worth It?

There are many reasons why home coffee roasters are worth investing in.

Apart from the money you save buying green beans instead of roasted coffee beans, home roasters also ensure you have a regular and consistent supply of freshly roasted coffee beans for the best flavor and aromas in your cup.

Plus for many coffee lovers, home coffee roasting is a fun hobby with plenty of scope to learn and improve your skills along the way.
