What Is Nitro Brew Coffee?

Firstly – what is nitro cold brew coffee?

A nitro cold brew is a cold brew coffee with the addition of nitrogen gas to create a unique coffee.

The result is a velvety, sweet and creamy cold brew that somewhat resembles a Guinness beer.

Naturally sweet thanks to the effect of the nitrogen bubbles, but without the sugar or calories of other iced coffee and hot coffee drinks, it is also a healthy alternative to traditional coffee drinks.

As Nitro Brew becomes increasingly popular, there is more interest from home brewers to make their own nitro cold brew at home.

How to Nitro Cold Brew Coffee

Below is a brief overview of how to make nitro cold brew coffee before we cover the features to consider before buying a nitro coffee kit.

1. Brew your cold brew coffee

In terms of how to make nitro cold brew coffee at home, first, you need to buy or make cold brew coffee with freshly ground coffee beans.

The coffee beans need to be coarsely ground because the extraction process for making cold brew is much slower than other brew types.

Typically it takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days to create the perfect cold brew – depending on your preference.

After the extraction process, the coffee grounds are removed via a filter and you are left with the cold brew concentrate.

You can add whatever amount of water you like to the concentrate until you get your desired cold brew strength.

2. Add the nitrogen

It’s now time to add nitrogen to the cold brew.

There are two different ways you can add nitrogen to your coffee:

  • With a handheld whipped cream dispenser
  • With a custom nitro keg.

The whipped cream dispenser method is great for those on a tight budget, but for the best results, it’s best to use a mini keg.

You can also purchase a dispenser specifically designed for making nitro cold brew.

The cold brew coffee is infused with nitrogen gas and dispensed via a pressurized valve to create the creamy texture and foamy head — more on this below.

You can find our detailed step by step guide to brewing nitro here.

Things to Consider When Buying the Best Nitro Coffee Machine

When it comes to the best nitro brew coffee maker, there are a few factors to consider to ensure you purchase one right for you.

Type (Keg or Dispenser)

As stated above, there are two different ways you can add nitrogen to your coffee:

  • With a kegerator and tap system
  • With a simple whipped cream dispenser.

Dispenser

The whipped cream dispenser is a metal canister with a dispensing nozzle that whips cream or other liquid using pressurized nitrous oxide cartridges.

You can use a whipped cream dispenser for making nitro cold brew by simply adding your cold brew to the dispenser and then dispensing the brew into your cup.

There are also specially designed dispensers made specifically for making nitro cold brew that we cover below.

Keg

However if you plan on drinking nitro cold brew regularly, it is more cost effective to purchase a mini keg.

These have a larger capacity and so you can make more nitro cold brew at once.

With a nitro cold brew keg, you fill it around 50-75% full of fresh cold brew.

You then add nitrogen capsules, chill in the fridge and after an hour or so the nitro brew will be ready to enjoy.

You then dispense the brew into your glass from the nitro cold brew kegerator through a pressurized valve just like you would with a Guinness.

It’s very satisfying watching the brew foam up as it’s poured.

Cartridges

Rather than using big nitrogen tanks for nitro cold brew coffee at home, most home brew systems use nitrogen cartridges.

Cartridges are compact and come in a range of different sizes.

Types of nitrogen cartridges

There are two types of cartridges available:

  • Pure nitrogen
  • Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide cartridges tend to be used in the whipped cream dispensers. They produce a sweeter and foamier nitro brew, but can also change the flavor of the coffee a little.

Pure nitrogen is preferred by many nitro coffee drinkers as there is no flavor imparted on the brew, and the finer bubbles enhance the velvety finish.

Cartridge sizes

There are two common cartridge sizes used in home nitro cold brew systems:

  • 2g pure nitrogen cartridges
  • 8g N20 (nitrous oxide) cartridges

Different nitro cold brew makers use different sized cartridges, so check this first before buying any.

Some machines are compatible with a range of cartridges, while another nitro coffee brewer may specify the exact type required.

You will need to purchase the cartridges separately, so it’s worth checking the price of the required cartridges first and take this into account when deciding which nitro cold brew coffee system to purchase.

Nitro Cold Brew Coffee

Capacity and Size

Just like any coffee maker, you’ll want to consider how many cups of homemade nitro cold brew coffee you wish to serve at once.

If it’s just to make for yourself from time to time, it might be best to go with a smaller capacity nitro cold brew home kit.

However, if you want to make a brew that you can drink over a week or you want a system for use at parties, then a larger size system will be best.

A larger capacity machine will also be bigger in physical size, so you’ll want to be sure you have the space to store it (both in the cupboard and the fridge).

Plus, the larger the system, the less portable it is, so not ideal if you want to take it into the office or away with you on vacation.

Budget

Like any type of coffee maker you purchase, your budget will play a big part in deciding which is the best at home nitro cold brew system for you.

When it comes to a home nitro brew coffee system, it’s best to consider both the cost of the coffee maker itself and the cost of the cartridges.

If your budget is tight and you don’t plan on drinking too much nitro cold brew, then perhaps a whipped cream dispenser may be best for you.

Cold Brew Coffee Nitro FAQs

Below are answers to some of the most common nitro cold brew coffee questions.

How does nitro cold brew work?

Nitro coffee is made by adding nitrogen gas to cold brew coffee. Once the coffee is brewed, nitrogen or nitrous oxide is injected into the cold brew. The nitrogen bubbles are very fine and create a creamy head and a velvety mouthfeel with a similar texture to stout beer.

Is Nitro cold brew better than cold brew?

Nitro cold brew has a smooth and rich mouthfeel with a creamy head on top that tastes quite different to regular cold brew. It can also taste naturally sweeter thanks to the injected nitrogen. But whether it is better than cold brew is an entirely personal choice.
