How To Make Patriotic Chocolate Dipped Pretzel Rods

Here’s a quick overview of how to make patriotic pretzel rods dipped in chocolate. For the full recipe and ingredient list, scroll down to the printable recipe card.

You’ll need a baking tray, parchment paper, 3 small microwave-safe bowls and a large plate to get started.

Prep: Line a large baking tray or plate with parchment paper to lay the dipped pretzels on.

Melt and dip: Work with one color at a time. Place the first color of candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 50% power for 30 seconds, then stir. Continue microwaving in 30 second increments, stirring in between each time, until the candy melts are completely melted and smooth.

Dip: Dip each pretzel rod into the melted chocolate. You may need to tilt the bowl and/or use a spoon to coat half of the stick. Gently shake off any excess chocolate then lay on the lined tray.

Decorate: While the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle the sprinkles over the chocolate coated pretzel. You can sprinkle by hand, or spread the sprinkles on a plate and roll the pretzel rod in the sprinkles.

Set: Allow the dipped pretzel rods to firm up on the tray – it usually takes 15-30 minutes for the chocolate to melt.

If you are in a rush, you can pop them in the fridge for 10 minutes to firm up – but don’t leave them in the fridge as the pretzels will go soft.

How To Store Pretzels Dipped In Chocolate

Store: Store the chocolate dipped pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature.

If it’s hot outside, find the coolest place in your kitchen to store them and perhaps a short burst in the fridge to firm them up before serving.

These snacks can’t be frozen or refrigerated as they will go soft.

Instructions

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Divide your pretzel rods between the three colors.
  • Working with one candy melt color at a time, place a single color of candy melts in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave at 50% power for 30 seconds, then stir. Continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring each time, until the candy melts are fully melted and smooth.
  • Dip one pretzel rod into the melted chocolate, tilting the bowl and using a spoon to cover the pretzel evenly. Coat about half the length of the pretzel rod.
  • Gently shake off any excess chocolate before placing the pretzel rod on the parchment paper.
  • While the chocolate coating is still wet, sprinkle the patriotic sprinkles over the pretzel rod. Sprinkle by hand or roll the wet chocolate coated pretzel in a plate of sprinkles for fuller coverage.
  • Repeat for each of the rods then allow them to set completely at room temperature (around 30 minutes) or by popping the tray in the fridge for about 10 minutes. Do not leave in the fridge or the pretzels will soften.
