Step 2: Pour the mixture into a lined pan. Spread and lightly press the mixture to cover the pan. Don’t press too hard – you want your bars to be light and airy, not hard and dense!

Leave to set at room temperature for at least 1 hour. Remove the mixture from the pan by lifting the parchment paper sides. Cut into squares or rectangles.

Recipe Tips For Success

  • Use a freshly opened box of rice krispies for the freshest tasting treats!
  • Spray the parchment paper and spatula (and even your fingers) with a non stick spray to help spread the sticky mixture in the pan.
  • Work quickly to add the sprinkles while the chocolate is still soft so the sprinkles stick to the chocolate before it hardens.

How To Store Rice Krispie Bars

Marshmallow squares are best enjoyed the day they are made. But, leftovers can be kept if stored correctly.

Store: Leftover rice krispie treats should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Don’t place in the fridge.

Freeze: Unfortunately these patriotic treats don’t freeze well and I don’t recommend freezing them.

Servings: 9 bars
Prep Time 20 minutes
Chilling Time 1 hour
Total Time 1 hour 20 minutes

Equipment

  • 9×13 baking pan
  • parchment paper
  • piping bags

Ingredients

  • 5 cups rice krispies cereal
  • ¼ cup butter 1/2 stick
  • 4 cups mini marshmallows about 10 ounces
  • ½ cup red candy melts
  • ½ cup blue candy melts
  • ½ cup white candy melts
  • ½ cup red white and blue sprinkles

Instructions

  • Line your pan with parchment paper, ensuring enough paper hanging over each side to make it easy to lift the treats out after chilling. Lightly spray the parchment paper with nonstick spray if you have handy. Set aside.
  • Melt the butter in a large pot over low heat. Once melted, add the mini marshmallows, stirring until completely melted.
  • Remove the pot from the heat and mix in the rice krispie cereal. Continue mixing until well combined and coated with marshmallow.
  • Pour mixture into the lined pan and spread out. It can help to use a spatula (greased with a little nonstick spray) to spread and lightly press the mixture down. Don't press to hard – just enough to flatten and cover the pan.
  • Leave to set at room temperature for at least 1 hour.
  • When ready to decorate, lift the rice krispie mixture out of the pan using the parchment paper on the sides and place on a chopping board. Cut into squares or rectangles to your preferred size.
  • To decorate, place the rice krispie treats on a wire rack with the parchment paper positioned underneath the rack to catch any drips.
  • Place the red candy melts in a small bowl and melt in the microwave – 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between each time. Use a piping bag, or fork, to drizzle the red melted chocolate over each treat.
  • Repeat with the white and then the blue melted chocolate, layering each color over the last. While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle with your sprinkles.
  • Allow to set completely at room temperature before serving.
  • These treats are best enjoyed the day they are made, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Notes

  1. Use a fresh box of rice krispies for the best tasting treats.
  2. Store leftovers at room temperature – don’t put them in the fridge or they will go soggy.
  3. Other decoration options include festive M&Ms, or patriotic edible stars.
