What is an Automatic Espresso Machine?

There are many types of home espresso coffee machine and the terminology can get a little confusing when reading espresso machine reviews.

There are basically four types of espresso machine:

You may be wondering why automatic coffee machines are not on this list. The term “automatic espresso machine” is used to refer to semi automatic, automatic AND super automatic machines.

In this article we cover automatic and super automatic espresso makers. These machines require very little input from you, the coffee drinker, to produce a great cup of coffee.

If you are instead looking for a semi-automatic espresso machine that require more user involvement, click here to read our reviews on the top espresso machines under $500.

For drip coffee makers with built in grinder click here to read our reviews.

What is the Difference Between an Automatic and Super Automatic Machine?

There is actually very little difference between them. In fact the terms are used interchangeably by many retailers and we do too. If we were to be really specific, the main difference would be:

  • A super automatic machine does everything. They grind and tamp the beans, steam the milk and self clean, all at the touch of a button. No coffee making experience necessary.
  • On the other hand, an automated coffee machine requires a little manual input, often to steam the milk or to clean the machine. They are still a super easy to use espresso machine and a great choice if you want a little more control over the coffee making experience.

Why Buy an Automatic Coffee Machine?

Apart from the obvious cost savings when you make buy an automatic machine (have you done the sums on that daily take out coffee yet?), why buy a super automatic coffee machine over a semi-automatic?

A super automatic espresso machine makes the process of making your daily coffee super simple. The machine does all the hard work.

  • There is no need to learn about grinding and tamping coffee.
  • You don’t need to practice frothing milk like a barista.
  • You don’t even need to stand at the machine whilst it is brewing.

With the simple touch of a button you can make great coffee every day.

An automatic espresso machine is a great choice if you want to drink great coffee at home, but don’t have the time (or inclination) to learn the coffee craft.

They are also a good alternative to a drip coffee maker if you drink just one or two coffees in the morning before you head off to work.

Features of the Best Automatic Coffee Machine

If you have read automatic espresso machine reviews you will know there are a lot of different features on top home espresso machines.

Read what features to look for so you can compare espresso machines and make the right choice.

1. Programmability

Do you drink just one style of coffee or do you mix it up? Are there many coffee drinkers in the house who prefer different types and strengths of coffee?

Some of the best super automatic espresso machines have simple one touch displays to program and choose your favorite drink. Some also have temperature settings and customizable strength settings.

If you are looking for a machine where you can program the strength and types of coffee, then look for a machine that is programmable.

2. Boiler Type

There are a wide range of boiler types on automatic coffee makers. Single thermoblocks and boilers are the most common, cheaper options. They are used for both brewing espresso and frothing milk, which means you need to do these steps one after the other.

If you regularly make a lot of coffee for large groups, or you need the fastest coffee in the morning, consider a super automatic with a double boiler or thermoblock.

These machines allow you to pull shots and prepare lattes at the same time. Dual boilers are more expensive and are found on most top super automatic espresso machines.

3. Milk Frothing

How the coffee maker froths milk is one of biggest differences between top automatic espresso machines.

  • Some have an inbuilt automatic milk frother and carafe.
  • Others have a manual or automatic steam wand.
  • Some have a connection point to a standalone milk container.

If you love a great cappuccino or latte, then the quality of the steam wand and /or milk frother should be high on your list of important features to consider when reading the best super automatic coffee machine reviews.

On the other hand, if you drink coffee black there is no need to pay extra for fancy milk frothing options.

4. Grinding Beans

Unlike many budget espresso machines, all of the top rated automatic espresso machines on our list have in built grinders.

There are differences however in terms of the grinder type, the number of grind settings plus options for pre-ground coffee.

Something to consider is super automatic machines often have problems using dark oily coffee beans. They tend to clog up the grinder and the brew unit and cause breakdowns.

So if you like strong dark coffee, the best automatic espresso maker will be one with a removable brew head for easier cleaning or one with less internal parts, like the Breville Oracle.

We recommend some medium roast coffee beans suitable for auto machines below or take a look at our full list of the best espresso beans here.

5. Ease to Clean

How easy the machine is to maintain is an important consideration when choosing the best coffee espresso machine.

Some machines have automatic self clean functions. Others have access to internal parts such as the brew head for a more thorough clean.

When choosing the best auto espresso machine for your home, consider how automatic you want the cleaning function to be and whether you will need to deep clean it more regularly if using dark coffee beans or a milk carafe.

6. Brand and Warranty

Buying a good espresso machine is a lot about buying the right brand. Some of the best espresso machine brands are on our list including Gaggia, Jura, Breville and DeLonghi. They consistently produce high quality machines that pull a great shot of espresso.

Another point of difference between the machines on our list is the length of warranty. The standard warranty period is 1 year. However some brands offer a 2 year warranty.
